Hotel Safety Tips

  • If you arrive to your destination by bus or taxi, ensure you stay with your luggage until it is brought to the hotel lobby.
  • Always be attentive to your luggage, purse or wallet when checking into your hotel
  • If the lobby is busy, remain alert. Thieves will take advantage of distractions and the confusion.
  • Make sure that your hotel reservations are guaranteed by credit card if you anticipate arriving late
  • Whenever possible do not accept accommodations on the ground floor that has doors and windows which opens to the outside. Hotels with interior hallways tend to be safer. For security in motels, avoid ground floor rooms off the parking lot. If you can’t get a room on a higher floor, take one facing the interior courtyard.
  • Consider purchasing a travel lock or alarm for your hotel room.
  • Request a room with a peephole, dead bolt and chain lock.
  • Make sure your room does not have a connecting door to the next room.
  • Keep your name private – give the check-in clerk a business card. If you are female, only use your first initials.
  • Leave instructions with the hotel not to disclose your room number or name to any third party.
  • Request a room change immediately if the hotel clerk accidentally announces or otherwise discloses your room.
  • Have any deliveries (takeout food, packages, etc.) delivered to the front deak or concierge.
  • Ask for a hotel room close to the elevator on a floor with restricted public access wherever possible.
  • Ask that your room is located away from stairwells, fire stairs and exits
  • Leave your lights on and the closet doors, bathroom door and shower curtain open if you are going out for the evening. Immediately request a security check if you notice a suspicious change in your room when you return.
  • Close your room door securely whenever you exit your room. Use all the locking devices provided when you are in your room.
  • Check that any sliding glass doors, windows and connecting doors are locked.
  • If you find a lock not working, contact the front desk for immediate repairs or a room change.
  • Use valet parking whenever possible. Self-park only in well-lit areas.
  • Use the main entrance when returning to your hotel/motel late at night
  • Place all valuables in the hotel’s safety deposit box
  • If you are called by a person stating they are with the hotel and need to come to your room and repair something, use caution. Always get the employees name and call the front desk to confirm.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the hotel management.
  • Do not needlessly display guest room keys in public or leave them where they can be stolen.
  • Do not answer the door without verifying who is there. If the person claims to be an employee, call the front desk to confirm his/her identity.
  • Never enter the room if you suspect someone is in there, if you are being followed, or if someone lingering near your door.
  • Do not invite strangers or acquaintances to your hotel room. Arrange to meet in a public location, such as the hotel lobby, restaurant or bar.
